Students in Excel generally have an emotional disability that significantly impacts learning. They can range from 9th to 12th grade and are required to take one core academic class either English or psychology within the Excel Program. Typically, 9th - 10th graders take an English class and 11th - 12th graders take The Psychology of Human Development. This psychology class is taught over 2 years and covers the same material as a general education psychology class. Additionally, one year of psychology includes a unit on CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and the next year includes a semester on DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy). These therapies are researched-based programs in which students learn skills to manage their emotional issues. Students in Excel generally have an emotional goal and therefore, must participate in clinical counseling and/or group counseling, based on their IEP.
