We Are M.E.T.C.O

We Are M.E.T.C.O

Founded in 1966, the Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity (M.E.T.C.O.) is a private, nonprofit organization. As the nation's second-oldest program devoted to expanding diversity and combating racial isolation, METCO enables roughly 3,300 students from Springfield and Boston to enroll in public schools across participating communities. The program receives state funding from the Massachusetts General Law through the State Legislature.

“I think education is power. I think that being able to communicate with people is power. One of my main goals on the planet is to encourage people to empower themselves.”  ~ Oprah Winfrey

GOALS

  • We are dedicated to offering students educational opportunities that enhance their academic growth, personal development, and interpersonal connections. In addition to building a robust academic foundation, we are committed to fostering an environment that celebrates educational, cultural, ethnic, and racial diversity throughout the METCO experience.

  • To continuously support and elevate the academic achievement of our Boston students, the METCO department focuses on the following key objectives:

    • Establishing high academic standards and setting clear expectations

    • Implementing target programs and initiatives designed to inspire, motivate, and empower students to excel academically.

  • Fostering integrated public education by uniting students from racially imbalanced Boston schools with peers from isolated suburban communities.
