SYB coaching possibilities for season
Parents of SYB players are given first priority for coaching slots, but each year there are always a number of open coaching slots for LS boys and girls who wish to coach for SYB. Once we determine how many teams are in need of a coach, we review the applications of all L-S students carefully and select coaches based on the following criteria:
- Prior coaching and related experience working with kids in grades 5-8
- Demonstrated responsibility, organization and maturity
- Communication skills with kids and parents
- References from non family members and non peers
- Prior basketball playing experience and knowledge of the game
- Grade level and age (typically 11th and 12th graders are selected)
- Age groups within SYB you are willing to coach
- Committed set of assistant LS coaches (typically 2-3 assistants with head coach; assistants must complete applications as well)
- Parent/guardian approval and support
Your team would be made up of 3rd/4th, 5th/6th graders or 7th/8th graders. Practice 1 hour per week and 1 game during the week starting the last week of November. The season runs through the first or second week of March (no games/practice during school holidays/breaks). We expect weekly email communications be sent to the parents to keep them informed of schedules and progress.
Coaching a team is a big responsibility and a great way to earn community service credit. It provides a fun experience for both the LS students and the players. We will have mandatory sessions before the season starts for student coaches to review the overall program and to review drills/skills/practice plans.
If interested in submitting an application, please complete the form found below by October 15. For additional information, please contact intown coordinator for the girls program (sudburygirlsbasketball@gmail.
Please note that we typically get many more applicants than open coaching slots, so this is a highly selective process and not all applicants will be selected.
Note: Community Service credit is only given to those students who formally submit an application and are officially selected by SYB. If you are selected as part of a group of LS students to fully manage a team (without a parent coach), you are eligible for a maximum of up to 20 hours of community service.
If you are selected to help a parent coach (not including your own parent), you are eligible for a maximum of up to 10 hours of community service.
If you help your own parent (and/or do not formally apply or get selected through SYB), you are NOT eligible for community service credit, but still can have a great experience that may increase your chances of being selected the following year.
At the end of the year, we will provide LS coaches a SYB Community Service Approval Form that will need to be signed by you, your parent coach (if you are assisting a parent) and the SYB League Commissioner. The SYB League Commissioner will have final approval of community service hours granted for each coach based on if all requirements and expectations defined by SYB were met. Please be mindful that LSRHS may have requirements as to when the form may be returned, in order to receive full credit.
