The Spanish program at Lincoln-Sudbury offers students the opportunity to continue studying Spanish after elementary and middle school, as well as to develop a strong foundation in the language for further use and study beyond high school.  Spanish 1 through 5 is offered, and Spanish classes years 2 through 5 are leveled, offering both Level 1 and Level 2.  Level 1 courses are designed for students who wish to be challenged in a more rigorous and immersive environment and who are prepared and motivated to participate in the extensive and intensive study of language and culture.  The goals of both Level 1 and 2 programs are the development of the three modes of communicative competence for language proficiency, the development of literacy in the target language, and the preparation for the AP and National Spanish Exam for those students motivated to take them.  Fifth year Spanish offers three options for students, a traditional language course, a cultural exploration focused course, and a film-based course.  At all levels of study students examine the history, geography, current events, government, art, literature and the world-famous popular music that is characteristic of the target cultures.

Beyond the classroom, enrichment opportunies include the Spanish Club, trips to Spanish speaking countries, and the Exchange program.  LS provides students with an opportunity to apply their skills in an authentic setting through participation in our exchange program with our sister high school  IES Ramón Areces in Grado, Spain. Rising 10, 11 and 12 graders are eligible to participate in this program. Spanish students also participate in the annual Declamation Contest, an oratory competition in which students learn and perform a written piece in the language they are studying.  

Why Spanish?

As the second most spoken language in the world by number of native speakers, Spanish is a vehicle for understanding a multitude of civilizations in a multiplicity of ethnic configurations. There is hardly a language that includes such a number of diverse cultures available for study today that is more suitable than Spanish. As the earliest of what were to become the Romance languages, from its inception Spanish has established itself as a principal purveyor of the concept of cultural diversity. Pragmatic and non-pragmatic consideration of both these postures is most important for students in today’s world. The growth of Spanish within the confines of the Iberian peninsula along with its spread beyond the borders of its land of origin to especially the U.S.,  have made it one of the most dominant linguistic forces in the world today.
