(137) SPORT: A SOCIAL HISTORY
This course will look at the importance of sport in societies around the world through a historical and sociological lens. Our goal will be to discover how and why athletics and its iconic figures inspire individuals and drive both societal conflict and profound social change. The course will center on the intersection of sport and major societal issues like race, gender, and social class. Course topics may include the use of sport as propaganda, sport as an outlet for nationalism, the influence of professional sports and sports advertising upon youth in America. (2-4)
