Dear LS Families and Students,
I am proud to report that the LS Global Scholar Program commenced with close to 80 students participating during the 2015-16 school year. The purpose of the program is to encourage students to attain a level of competency, knowledge and empathy in the global context. Students are invited to build a program tailored to their own interests. The pedagogical emphasis is for each student to reflect on his or her learning, to have experiences that will transform his or her thinking about the world, and how he or she will develop capacity to be a productive influence in that world. As part of the program, a faculty advisor helps facilitate each student’s individualized program, but an underlying principle for success is each student being responsible to his or her learning and the attainment of required benchmarks.
The program requires a three-year commitment to a plan of study that will include globally oriented coursework to be selected from current LS offerings, international travel, language study, community service, and reflective essays at the end of 10th and 11th grade. Students will develop a capstone project for presentation at the end of senior year. A transcript outlining the student work completed will be attached to the student transcript when there has been successful completion of the global scholar program over the three-year period.
Students must submit a Statement of Intent in order to begin participation in the Global Scholars Program. Any student who turns in a completed statement will be allowed to participate. Student Statements of Intent is due online by the end of the first semester during 10th grade. Informational sessions will be held during ACA block once a semester and will be announced via morning announcements. Any other questions can be directed to the program co-advisors, Mr. JK Park and Mr. David Grace.
