What is Sonder?

Sonder is the profound realization that every person we encounter is living a life as vivid, complex, and chaotic as our own, complete with their own ambitions, routines, and worries.

Sonder is a recognition of the hidden inner worlds of strangers and the understanding that their emotional landscape and depth of feeling is as intense and meaningful as our own.

Sonder is a short film and documentary project LS students PJ Purvis and Moses Sibley conceived in the spirit of the Filmbuilding Belonging project 2 years ago, in which 5 pairs of LS students, 1 Boston resident and 1 Lincoln or Sudbury resident co-create visual stories of their personal and shared experiences.

Sonder is the result of a grant from EMA Foundation awarded to PJ, Moses, and LS and Lori Hodin’s incomparable stewardship.

Sonder’s products and process are an embodiment of values EMA shares with LS -  fostering caring and cooperative relationships, respecting human differences, cultivating community and learning through stories and storytelling.

Sonder is an epiphany of empathy.

Sonder is a reminder of the shining spirit of all the people we encounter.

Sonder is PJ’s film debut, Moses’ LS film finale, and Lori Hodin’s magnum opus

We hope to make the Sonder Film Screening a community event and an opportunity to cultivate community and learn a bit more about each other and ourselves in the process.

We invite you and encourage you to pass the word.  Thank you to everyone involved in Advisory for supporting this project and to those of you who help spread the word in advisory.

Thank you for your support!
