Dear L-S Families, Students and Staff,

Attached is a copy of our preliminary plans for school opening that was submitted to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) today. We are required to submit a description of three plans: 100% remote, hybrid of in-person and remote and 100% in-person. We are also required to indicate which plan we are leaning toward at this moment in time for school opening. Thank you to Virginia Blake who was drafted the submittal on our behalf. As recommended by me to the LS School Committee on behalf of the school district, it approved the half day hybrid model at its meeting of July 28.

Please note that prior to taking its vote the members of the Committee discussed at length concerns about current local and state trends of rates of infection and the lack of availability of testing, funding for testing, and assurance of quick turnaround times for testing results to support a safe return to in-person learning in school. These concerns are documented in our submission to the state. While we are working hard to have an opportunity to bring students back to in-person learning we have no choice but to remain vigilant with respect to environmental factors and advocate for sufficient protocols to be in place to ensure a safe learning and working environment for students and staff during the pandemic.

Our Comprehensive Plan Documents must be submitted to DESE by August 10. DESE will provide feedback to Districts by August 7 to incorporate into the final plans. An update to our draft comprehensive plan will be distributed and posted to our website next week.

I extend my deep appreciation to and for all the staff members who have been working through the summer to develop learning plans, to our teachers who have been adjusting curriculum and practice, our buildings and ground, business and tech staff who have been preparing our facility to plan for school opening.
