Draft Plan for Opening

Draft Plan for Opening
Posted on 07/20/2020
Dear LS Students, Families and Staff,

Here is the link to the planning document for school opening in DRAFT form. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1UTUc6KJ3PPu9qRDb0esFVxuKkca3X0dozTYOyDHoNb4/edit The purpose of sharing a preliminary draft at this time is to facilitate the opportunity to receive input and questions. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is requesting that each school district submit plans for three possible scenarios: full in-person, hybrid in-person/remote and full remote learning.

The safe return of as many students as possible to in-person school, to maximize learning under novel and challenging circumstances and to address our students’ emotional and physical wellbeing are our highest priorities.

This summer, all L-S Staff have been preparing to adjust curriculum and improve strategies to be able to teach in-person and remotely in a novel environment this fall that may necessitate switching modalities of instruction if parameters of the pandemic shift. Many staff members have extended themselves beyond the requirement to plan for their own individual responsibilities to assume the responsibility to create systemic plans affecting every aspect of the school day. Every practice and protocol has had to be rethought. Due to the immensity of the task many of these individuals have been working non-stop since the close of school to plan for school opening.

School Committee will be holding an open forum at its regularly scheduled meeting July 21, 2020 following a presentation on the plan. I will present the plan and my recommendation to the School Committee at that time. More information will be forthcoming from Ellen Joachim, Chair of the LS School Committee on how to send in questions. I will be meeting with representatives of the Student Advisory Council, Student Senate, School Council, LSPO and METCO Parent Leadership next week to receive feedback and answer questions. As they have been happening through the summer, Faculty drop in sessions will continue through next week.

LS School Committee will vote to approve our submittal to DESE at its meeting of July 28, 2020.

Thank you for your attention and participation.

Sincerely,

Bella Wong
