FY18 Budget, Part II
Dear LS Families,
The Town of Sudbury’s Annual Town Meeting started last night. The FY18 Recommended Operating Budgets for the Town, Sudbury Public Schools and Lincoln Sudbury were all presented as part of Article 3. After some questions from the audience, all three budgets were approved by an overwhelming majority of present Town Meeting members. Moderator Michael Fee managed the process. Additionally, Chair Elena Kleifges was formally recognized for her six years of service as a member of the LS School Committee!
This now completes the approval process for the FY18 Lincoln Sudbury budget! The total budget increase which includes expenses earmarked toward the OPEB Liability and decreasing expenses allocated to debt service is 3.21% over FY17. Please note while all educational programs and staffing are successfully retained, we have significantly reduced expense lines for replacing instructional capital such as computer equipment, level funded instructional materials lines and reduced some of our tuition reserve fund. Notwithstanding these expense reductions, this is a far more positive than negative outcome given the challenge of balancing needs against limited financial resources.
I thank all of our budget preparers and administrative team for their thoughtful and timely contributions to the creation of the LS FY18 Budget. I thank Sherry Kersey for her astute management of many draft iterations and answering detailed questions along the way. I extend our gratitude to the members of the LS School Committee for their advocacy and support throughout many budget meetings and hearings.
Other important news to share is that Sudbury Public Schools and the Town of Sudbury each received Town Meeting approval to seek additional funds to support their respective budgets through an override vote. The date for the town-wide vote by ballot will be May 9. SPS has reduced 19 FTEs for next school year. Passage of the override would prevent a further reduction of an additional 11 FTEs.
By the way, Town Meeting will end tonight or possibly tomorrow night with Article 35: Proposed By law: Plastic Check-out Bag Ban and Article 36: Proposed By law: Plastic Water Regulations. Both articles were conceived and promulgated by student members of the LS Environmental Club.
