Dear LS Students and Families,
The calendar reminds me that winter officially started today! As a parent of a high school senior, I know I am not alone in thinking that the fall was a blur. A little over a month ago I was doing my best to support an intensely stressed out son finish his college applications for the November deadlines. On Monday evening he learned he was accepted Early Decision. And, just like that, after a year of college boards, college visits, essays, and forms upon forms to be filled out, it’s done. A multitude of hopeful options obscured by uncertainty now distilled to the one. As a family, we are as relieved as we are happy!
His is the first college acceptance among the grandchildren in our extended family. The timing of this is particularly bittersweet since his grandmother, my mother, passed on December 8 and her services were held a week ago. My mother never attended college. This, of course, would have been a very special first milestone to celebrate with her.
Mom was just shy of her 85th birthday and I was fortunate to have her all these years. There will be other milestones I will miss sharing with her. There are many of you, young and old, who have navigated this path before me, of life after losing a parent. I think of all of you as you must be thinking of them at this time of year. I am most appreciative of the words of comfort I have received and send you thoughts in return.
I am most grateful to our students and staff who have worked so hard together to have a productive fall. Congratulations to our musicians for the back-to-back choral and instrumental concerts, and to the students who participated in the speech and debate competition held at LS in early December. A commendation to staff and students who organized the Courage to Care assembly this past Wednesday. Congratulations to all of our students who have received college acceptances! And good luck to all of our students who are waiting to hear from that one school that will make their day!
See you in the New Year and enjoy your break!
