New! SUDBURY’S HISTORY THROUGH THE AGES

Session 1 - Co-hosted by the non-profit Friends of the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge Board Members Jan Wright and Chris Stahl. The program will begin with a five minute overview of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service at Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge (ARNWR) then move into the history, beginning in 1600 with Native American presence, through Colonial times settlement, King Philip's War, the period of homesteaders and farm families, World War 2 (1942-1945) during its days as the Fort Devens Sudbury Annex, through the transfer of ownership to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service in 1999, to present day. The Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge is part of the Atlantic Migratory Flyway and the ongoing Blanding’s Turtle Repatriation Project.  

Session 2 - Co-hosted by the non-profit Friends of the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge Board Members Jan Wright and Chris Stahl. Come enjoy an in-person guided tour of the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge. Masks must be worn and social distancing rules must be followed.

Session 3 - Hosted by the non-profit Sudbury Historical Society (SHS). Come learn about the initial settlement of Sudbury in 1638 by the British Colonists. Course materials will be drawn from the Pulitzer Prize winning book Puritan Village: The Formation of a New England Town by Sumner Chilton Powell, and from the resources at the Sudbury Historical Society. The course will consist of a zoom lecture, followed by the opportunity to visit the Sudbury Historical Society’s History Center and Museum and tour the Baggott Gallery’s exhibition on Sudbury’s History. This session is designed as an in-depth look at how Sudbury came to be, and the broader context of how settling New England was done.
