Students will learn the basic strategies of street safety. Non-physical
strategies of personal safety such as assertiveness skills, the use of voice,
and safety awareness strategies will be taught. The physical skills will focus
on techniques that are most effective when a male assailant attacks a woman. Students
will learn to use the strength in their lower body to counter an engulfing attack. Students
will then be presented with real-life situations in which they will practice
their non-physical strategies as well
as physical skills, full-force, on a "male mugger". Related
topics to be discussed in class will be physical and emotional abuse, sexual
harassment, and date rape.
