Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I show up late on Thursday morning and I miss the bus to the airport?
- The bus will depart promptly at the scheduled time. If you miss it, your parents must drive you to the airport themselves. Do not miss the bus!
What kind of ID can I bring to get onto the airplane if I don’t have a driver’s license?
- You can bring your L-S student ID if you don’t have a driver’s license. You do not have to bring your passport if you have a student ID. If you do not have a student ID, you can get one in the A.V. Center, room A207.
How much money should I bring to Washington, D.C.?
- Please remember that you will have to buy all of your meals for three days. Depending on your appetite and eating preferences, you probably want to budget about $30 to $40 per day for food. You might also want to bring extra money for souvenirs, shopping, etc. Also remember that your Metro passes and museum admissions are already all paid for.
What happens if I bring alcohol, drugs, or cigarettes, or if I am caught using any of these substances?
- You will be sent home at your parents’ expense and the necessary school disciplinary measures will be taken. Trust us, you do not want this to happen.
Is there a curfew?
- Yes, there is a curfew. The curfew is 11:00 pm. Chaperones will go around and do room checks at this time. After this time, you must stay in your room and keep the noise level down to respect the other guests in the hotel. If you are caught leaving your room after 11:00, there will be serious consequences, involving any or all of the following: loss of free time, suspensions at school, or even being sent home at your parents’ expense.
What happens if I NEED to leave my room?
- If you need to leave your room, you must call your teacher's room and get permission. You will need to have a good reason to get permission.
What type of clothing is appropriate to wear while walking around outside in Washington, DC during early to mid-March?
- Even though our nation's capitol is considerably more to the south than Boston is, your teachers would STRONGLY recommend that you bring a warm jacket. While it certainly is possible that we will have delightful spring weather, it is also possible that winter's icy grips will still be upon us. You will be cold if you bring only a sweatshirt. Please bring a warm jacket, especially if you are going on one of the earlier trips.
What happens if I know I am going to be late for a designated meeting time?
- You need to call your assigned chaperone and let him/her know. You will be given a wallet-sized card with contact information on it.
Can I wander around Washington, D.C. by myself during my free time?
- NO. You definitely may NOT wander around Washington, D.C. by yourself. At ALL TIMES, you must be with a small group (two or more people) and one of you MUST have a cell phone. Your chaperone must be able to get in contact with you at ALL TIMES. If you do not have a cell phone, and neither does your friend, you must travel around with someone who does have a cell phone. Any student who finds themselves without a partner or group during free time will join one or more chaperones. This is not an unusual occurrence, and both chaperones and students have enjoyed an afternooon of sightseeing, shopping and museum-hopping!
What should I do in Washington during my free time?
- One of the nicest things about Washington is how much you can do here for free. Most of the museums, national monuments, and parks are free. So take advantage of all that Washington has to offer!
