STUDENT SENATE ELECTIONS 2010

 

We encourage any student who is interested to run for office.  The following is information you will need to run for Student Senate:
 
The Job of a Student Senator
Please read "The Purpose of the Student Senate" in the Senate Consitution.Beyond what that section of the consitution states, members need to be able to respect fellow senators' and the advisors' opinions and engage in civil conversation and debate.    Student Senate meets every blue Wednesday during ACA block. It is mandatory that senators attend all meetings or give notice otherwise. A senator must be prepared to put in a number of hours of work beyond meeting time.
 
The Nomination Procedure
Candidates must write a brief statement (one concise page should suffice) explaining their interest in being a senator, their qualifications, and their general views on important school issues. Written statements should be emailed to LSSenate@gmail.com (Go to the Raise Your Voice! page of this site for a link) or to Ms. Han (caroline_han@lsrhs.net).   Candidates’ statements will be published on the Student Senate web site and on the Student Senate bulletin board (near MLK office).
 
The Election

The election will take place by ballot in your English classes.  Voting will be by class (freshman, sophomore, junior), with each class electing a proportionate number of senators.  Your English teachers will give marked ballots to the advisors, who will count them and announce the results.  

Campaign Etiquette

DO

• talk to your potential constituents or otherwise publish your views on school issues
• make clear some concrete goals you would have as a senator
• highlight any legitimate differences that distinguish you from other candidates

DON'T

• make any negative, personal attacks on other candidates
• use any social networking sites or email for negative campaigning
• place campaign ads in inappropriate places, which includes the bulletin boards that are designated for news of a specific club or group
