Assignment 3: Spreadsheet Visuals

In the last tutorial, you learned how to find sums and averages of a list of numbers. Practice this again by doing the following exercise:

Make a spreadsheet that calculates your average if these are your grades:

You will need several columns. Your average is the total number of points you got, out of the total number you could have gotten, times 100. Format the numbers so it all looks good.

Charts

There are several types of charts available. You can make graphs of data, pie charts, bar charts, and several other kinds.

Pie Chart
activity chart in ExcelA pie chart is used when a whole thing is broken up into parts. Make a pie chart depicting how you spend your time on an average Saturday, with at least 5 things on the list. To start, fill some spreadsheet cells with the activities, and number of minutes spent on that activity: You should have at least five activities. To make your chart, hightlight your data and use Insert->Chart from the menu.

Line Graph
A line graph is used to show data - usually how something changes over time. Use data from the following site to make a line graph of average temperature vs. month for boston. Label all the axes. http://www.climate-zone.com/climate/united-states/massachusetts/boston/

Bar Graph
Often used to compare values, much like a line graph. Make a bar graph using the same data from the line graph section.

(If you have time) Look at the other choices for charts. Choose one and make a chart (you may have to make up or find some data).

Save your final spreasheet as Spreadsheet2.xls.

Translating These Skills to Other Applications...

Do the following in Numbers (can be found in Applications -> iWork):

  1. Select a range of cells with the top left being A5 and the bottom right being E12. Give this block of cells a blue background, with yellow text.
  2. list of the number 12.27 formatted in different waysType the number 12.27 in cell A15. Highlight from cell A15 to A20, and then use the Fill->Down tool to fill in all the cells with 12.27. Use the toolbar tools OR the inspector to individually format the cells in your column of 12.27s to look like the one at right.
  3. Put this list of grades into a column: 89 94 77 67.5 93 88 90. Make a cell that finds the average grade using the average function. Label it. Make a cell that finds the total of these grades using the sum function. Label it.
  4. Make BOTH a pie chart AND a bar/column graph depicting how you spend your time on an average Saturday, with at least 5 things on the list. To start, fill some spreadsheet cells with the activities, and number of minutes spent on that activity. You should have at least five activities.
