Taking and Editing Photos
(more with Fireworks and iPhoto)
Make a new Pages document entitled 'photos'
- Take some pictures around the school, of places and people, and have someone take a picture of you. You should have at least 5 photos.
- Move the photos to iPhoto by attaching the camera to your computer. Wait for iPhoto to recognize the camera, and select Import.
- Before making any changes to your photos, duplicate the photo and alter only the copy -- you'll need the originals as well as the altered copies for this assignment.
- In iPhoto, crop one of your photos. Use the crop tool to select a region. Click on Done when you are satisfied with the new dimensions of your photo.
- Using iPhoto, try some of the other editing tools (Adjust and Filters) with (a duplicate of) your second photo. Alter the photo in a way that you like and save the changes to the duplicate.
You can tell iPhoto to edit photos using an application other than iPhoto (see image to the right). Go to the iPhoto menu and choose Preferences. In the General preferences, choose to Edit photos 'In application...' When the window opens, browse to Adobe Fireworks and the application Fireworks CS3 and choose it.- Use some of the filters and editing tools in Fireworks to alter three more of your pictures in at least three different ways.
- Using either iPhoto or Fireworks editing, make one of your (duplicate) images Black and White.
- In Fireworks, use the text tool to write on one of your images. Choose the font, size and color you want.
- Combine 2 images by using Layers and the eraser tool (and other tools, if you want). Put yourself into a picture you find on the internet or into another of your pictures. I will demonstrate this in class.
- (if you have time) Make an animated image. This can be a drawing and not a photo, though it could be a modified photo. Save it as an animated gif from the Image Preview window. Save the image as "animated.gif" -- this won't go on your Keynote document. (Click here for a tutorial on one way to create an animation in Fireworks.)
When you are done, your Keynote slideshow should have 8 slides:
- 1 cropped photo
- 1 photo altered in iPhoto
- 3 photos altered in Fireworks
- 1 black and white photo
- 1 photo with text
- 1 image that combines at least two images (this slide with have three images)
And each slide will have:
- a copy of the original photo
- a copy of the altered photo
- written information about how and where the change was made (what filter or editing tool was used AND in what program)
So that each slide should look something like this...

"I believe that we are solely responsible for our choices,
and we have to accept the consequences of every deed,
word, and thought throughout our lifetime."
- Elisabeth Kübler Ross
