L-S Symphonic Jazz Ensemble
The Symphonic Jazz Ensemble is comprised of Symphonic Band students interested in exploring the language of jazz music in a big band (large group) setting.
Areas covered within the context of the course: Learning how to play stylistically in the various dialects of jazz, studying the history behind the sound from the different eras of jazz, emphasizing the importance of individual expression through improvisation.
The Jazz Ensemble performs at L-S Concerts throughout the year, potentially at area educational jazz festivals such as the MA IAJE Jazz Festival, and the Berklee High School Jazz Festival. The jazz groups present an annual jazz concert in February with a guest group, the Worcester Jazz Orchestra and the Indian Hill Big Band have performed with the L-S Jazz Ensemble and provided master classes for the students in the past.
Please Note: There are no auditions for Jazz Ensemble. All students enrolled for Symphonic Band have the option to sign up for Jazz Ensemble at course registration time or during the first week of classes. How does this work? Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble are scheduled for the same class period and alternate rehearsals throughout the L-S white and blue week class schedules.
Members of the Symphonic Jazz Ensemble may audition for the MMEA Eastern Junior and Senior District Jazz Bands and subsequently the All State Jazz Band.

The Worcester Jazz Orchestra was the special guest group at our Jazz Concert on Feb. 12th 2009. Students received technique and improvisation clinics from the members and performed a joint selection in the concert with this outstanding group. Link to Poster This event was funded by the L-S Friends of Music, The David French Music Company, and additionally this program is supported in part by a grant from the Sudbury Cultural Council which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

The L-S Jazz Ensemble and Select Jazz Combo performed at Berklee High School Jazz Festival on Feb. 9th. Senior Alto Saxophonist Paul Antion who was awarded two Judges Choice Awards in the combo and ensemble category and an Outstanding Musicianship Award for the Level 1 Ensemble Class. Kudos' also go to senior Alex Muri for a Judges Choice Award for his musicianship skills on the bass.
