Learning Objectives
  • To learn and explore the concept of positive and negative space.
  • To explore timing in animation
  • To learn how to rotate, flip and change center points of objects in Flash

BEFORE you begin any animation make sure the following is DONE:

  1. Make a black square 175 pixels square with no outline
    • make a square
    • select the square
    • enter the desired dimensions into the properties panel
  2. Delete the outline (if necessary)
  3. Cut large pieces from the edges of the square
    • You can do this by either using a selection tool, or painting with a different color - use the "paint inside" or "Paint Selection" option for your paintbrush.
  4. As you cut each piece, group each piece. You may want to switch into “outline view” (I call it X-ray view) to see the shapes that you cut.
  5. Distribute all pieces into separate layers
  6. Ungroup a large piece and cut out a “sub” piece
  7. Group the sub piece and group the piece it was cut out of, then Cut & Paste the new “sub” piece into it’s own layer
  8. Move the center points of all pieces to the edge of the square.
    Select the piece with the transform tool to move the center point
  9. Double check to make sure:
    • Each piece is a grouped object
    • Each piece is on it’s own layer
    • Each piece has it’s center point along the edge of the square

To Animate

Use keyframes and motion tweens. On a given keyframe flip the object in or out of the square by using: Modify Menu > Transform > Flip Vertical or Horizontal

Requirement Summary
  • Your animation must start and end on a "closed" black square
  • All the pieces should NOT animate at the same time.
  • Pieces may be animated more than once
  • Some pieces are required to have "sub" pieces
