This is a list of some basic computer related terms that you should know.
applications:
The things on your computer you use to to look at stuff, listen to stuff, change stuff and to make stuff. A "program" on the computer used to create, make or edit files. For example: Microsoft Word, is a word processing application; Photoshop is a graphics application.
database:
A collection or “data bank” of related data (like a list) organized for convenient access. Things that are organized in lists, are often kept in databases, names, addresses, mailing lists, etc.
files:
The stuff on your computer you look at, listen to, change and make. The sets of data collected together as an individual unit, that is created by using applications on the computer. When you write a paper and save it, you’ve created a file.
hard Drive:
Storage space on a computer. They are like virtual filing cabinets.
network:
A system of computers that communicate with each other. Almost all of the school’s computers are on a network, each one allowing access to servers, printers, and the Internet.
RAM [Random Access Memory]:
The memory that a computer "brain" uses to operate. The more RAM a computer has, the more “stuff” it can handle at one time.
server:
A computer that people log into to access files. When you log into a computer at LS, all of your files are actually stored on the school server located on the second floor of Building B.
spreadsheet:
A worksheet that’s arranged in a table of columns and rows for easy reference, analysis, and calculation. Microsoft Excel is a database application.
user account:
A reserved space on a server for an individual to store their files. At LS, you are given 1 gigabyte of storage for all of your school related files etc.
word processor:
An application used to create and edit text files. For example: Microsoft Word, AppleWorks, or TextEdit.
