Change of Speed

The layout sheet for the ball "Rolling Ball Slow-in" defines the path on which the ball travels, and where it stops. Before the ball stops it slows down. What YOU need to determine, is the location of the ball on each frame, keeping in mind that the ball changes speed. You will make vertical marks along the line to show the location of the ball during each frame. Trace this layout as a guide when drawing each frame.

The Creative Last Two Seconds
Once you've drawn the frames of the ball rolling in, now get creative and invent what happens next. This should be about two or three seconds (a minimum of two).

Making the "slow in"

  1. Mark off the last 2 1/2" of the right end of the line, Measure and mark four marks 5/8" apart. (Illustrations are larger than actual size)
  2. Look at the right half of your segments. Divide those segemtns in half.
  3. Again, look at the right half of the small segments you just made and divide those in half.
  4. Repeat this again with the segments on the right half (you may have to do this by eye, without the aid of a ruler)..
  5. Finally, half JUST THE LAST SEGMENT
  6. Now, mark off the left portion of the line about every 5/8" (working from right to left)- giving the ball a constant speed before it begins its slow-in.
  7. As best as you can, number the marks starting from the left end.

Drawing the Rolling Ball

  1. Person #1
    • number the sheet
    • draw a dot where the first frame mark is, by tracing the layout sheet
    • pass the sheet to person number 2
    • repeat for the next frame
  2. Person #2
    • Make a Refenece Guide for the size of the ball. You will trace this to keep the ball size consistent.
      • On your reference guide, draw a short horizontal line where the ball meets the ground.
      • Then draw a vertical mark where the ball meets this line.

    • Take the sheet that person number 1 handed you
    • Trace the Reference Guide so that the intersection of the horizontal and vertical lines, line up with the dot that person 1 drew, then draw a circle.
    • Hand the sheet to person #3
    • continue until all frames are done
  3. Person #3
    Shade the ball, thinking about the direction that the light source is coming from
  4. Person #4
    Make a reference guide for where the horizon is. The horizon should be exactly the same for each frame. Trace the reference guide and draw the horizon on each frame. Shade a shadow, again, thinking about the direction that the light source is coming from.
