In your opinion, are there any connections between the ancient games of gladiator combat and modern day sports? How are they different in terms of audience appeal and how are they alike?

The Ancient Gladiatorial games were far more violent and barbaric than any other current form of entertainment, yet the remains of such spectacles are still evident in media seen every day. Football is a very good example of a game that resembles the violence and brutality that was exemplified in the ancient gladiatorial games. Although it does not include killing, it is what some people would call unnecessary violence. Other sports that pose the same case as football include Hockey, Boxing, Wrestling and Rugby. Why you ask would our sophisticated modern day world allow such violence and to persist in the world? It’s really just because humans no matter how intelligent, always enjoy watching these outrageous and brutal spectacles, it's a matter of human instinct. Audiences of all types will always watch violence because it is so extreme and they know that it is not them being injured but someone else. This mind set has been the human instinct for all the years we have existed, and it not something that is likely to change.

The gladiator combat is similar to modern day sports because just like the games many sporting events involve violence. Violence is the main attraction for many of the viewers and fans of the sport. People now, just like in ancient times, like to see people go through things that they wouldn’t want to. In hockey they allow fighting which is one of the main reasons why fans like to go and watch the games. They are different however because during these games nobody dies on a regular basis. People today won’t go home unhappy if they didnít see someone die. It is quite the opposite now a days because people like to see the violence but they also like to see the athletes all right afterward.
