The L-S Safety Review Committee was formed as a subcommittee of the L-S School Committee. In setting up this committee, the School Committee gave it the following charge:

"To review, report and make recommendations on all operational, physical and educational aspects of Lincoln-Sudbury as they relate to the safety of students, faculty and staff."

The group has held weekly public meetings from March 21 to June 28, 2007. The Commitee has published its "Preliminary Report." The report describes the work that the Committee has done, the issues that were explored, the nuances and complexities surrounding various topics that emerged as a result of discussion, and suggestions and recommendations for the School Committee and the School Administration to consider.

Printed copies of the "Preliminary Report" are available at the Lincoln and Sudbury public libraries as well as in the library at L-S.

The members of the Committee are interested in receiving comments regarding the preliminary report. Please include your name and address in your comments.

In addition, the Committee encourages members of the community to view a recording of a presentation made by Dr. William Pollack to the Committee on June 13, 2007. Dr. Pollack is a nationally renowned authority and author specializing in fostering safe school environments, detecting and preventing violence in schools, and the development of adolescent boys. The presentation and ensuing discussion will be rebroadcast at various times during the summer on the community access tv channels in both Lincoln and Sudbury. In addition, a copy of the DVD is available for circulation at both the Lincoln and Sudbury libraries.

The Committee is not meeting over the summer. In the fall, members of the Committee will meet with the L-S School Committee at one of its regularly scheduled public meetings to discuss next steps.

Each member of the Committee feels deeply affected by the tragic event that occurred on January 19, 2007 at the school. It is our sincere hope that we have contributed to a well thought out response which transcends that particular tragedy and contributes to meaningful improvements at the school. We thank the entire L-S community for working with us in this endeavor with a spirit of community and cooperation.
