Alumni Newsletter #1     2006-2007
October, 2006

This first alumni newsletter of the year is being written just as summer is giving way to another crisp New England autumn. The first hints of color can already be seen in the trees surrounding the school's athletic fields.

School started uneventfully this year. The new building is now old news, in the sense that most students have never known any other high school building. In fact, this year's graduating class will be the last to have spent any time in the old building.

Here's some news that hopefully will be of interest to alumni:

>> PLEASE SAVE THIS DATE! L-S is turning 50!

On the evening of Tuesday, November 14, we will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the school. The doors first opened in 1956.

At 6 pm, the names of three former faculty will be added to the Wall of Recognition for their exceptional service to L-S. The honorees? You've heard of them! ...Jim Dusenbury (Wellness), Any Oleski (Wellness), Tom Puchalsky (English). Share this important moment with them!

Then, the Virginia K. Kirshner Auditorium, the Rogers Theatre, the Robert Wentworth Music Center, and the Paul Mitchell Russian History Collection will be re-dedicated.

Finally, the keynote address will be delivered at 7:30 pm. The topic: "What is Lincoln-Sudbury's Place In The Universe?" And what better speaker to address this important anniversary question than Dr. Robert Kirshner (L-S alum & Harvard professor), widely regarded as one of the world's great astronomers and teachers.

It should be quite a memorable evening! If you are in the area, please consider coming. We want alumni! Help pass the word. A special newsletter will be sent out with the exact time--and announcements will be sent to the local papers.

- The football field is going to be renovated. The future will bring an artificial turf field, a new track, and new bleachers. The project will involve a financial collaboration between the school, the town, and private donors. The field will also be used by the town, when school teams don't need it. This is the final piece of the building project.

- On or near Veterans' Day, a tulip poplar from the estate of Franklin Roosevelt, will be dedicated as the school's memorial of appreciation to all WWII veterans. The original tree, which had to be replaced, was purchased as a gift by the Class of 1996, a half-century after the war ended. A bronze plaque acknowledging the sacrifices of the veterans will be set next to the tree. Precourt, the stone yard in Sudbury, will be donating the stone on which the plaque will be mounted..

- Art teacher Paula Wolfe and AV Director/Dyad adviser Fred Walker will be retiring in January. Best wishes!

- There was a walkout from school on September 21, a protest against the Iraq Way. Students carried signs to the town center. About 20 students participated.

- The third annual Eric Drobinski ('99) Memorial Walk stepped off on September 24. Participants have been raising money to fund different ways of dealing with teen-age depression. Contact Mr. and Mrs Drobinski in Sudbury.

- L-S junior Alexandra Siega has won the national Irish step-dance championship. Congrats!

- A beautiful new mural had been added to the school collection. It was painted by Lindsay Majno, '06, and concerns Katrina and New Orleans, a tragedy that hit the school community hard. Soon a link to all school artwork, old and new, will be sent out to all via a newsletter. Our on-line "school history/culture" pages are being updated.

Also, L-S is on the verge of forming a special relationship with a hard-hit school in Louisiana. More on this in the next newsletter.

- The 5th anniversary of 9/11 was commemorated at the school with a solemn "moment of silence," and eloquent remarks by an L-S student who lost his uncle on that unforgettable day five years ago.

- The 19th Annual Jimmy Mac March To Defeat AIDs is scheduled for October 22, at 10:30 am. It's one of the school's oldest traditions, and alumni are more welcome. We have lost 11 graduates to to this plague that has already taken the lives of 25 million world-wide.

- A limited edition of "Sudbury-opoly" has been produced which unfortunately misstates the school motto, adopted on the occasion of our 40th anniversary in 1996: Not "Think for yourself, but think of others," but, alas, in Sudbury-opoly, "Think of yourself, but think of others."

And so it goes! That's it for now.
