Newsletter 1/2006

No huge stories to share, which is actually good news. L-S seems to be in a good groove right now. The new building is finished and all systems are "go". Mainly teachers and students are busy with the never-ending cycle of work: preparing exams, taking exams, applying to colleges, getting ready to go into the deep hibernation known as "senior slump" etc.

This winter hasn't been as harsh as last year's (up to this point), but it has been more tricky. The storms have been throwing some curve balls at us, leaving administrators confused about whether to call school off or not. Suffice it to say we have had school days during blizzards and snow days when barely a flake has fallen. That's New England weather for you. Everyone is bearing up with the usual good humor and indomitable spirit (mostly). But students definitely seem to feel we should always err on the side of snow days!

Some work still needs to be done on the outside of the building. The artificial turf field needs to be widened 15 feet on each end (the installers goofed), and then the football field will also go artificial and will get new grandstands as well. A special town committee is raising money for the project (please consider contributing) which will become a joint town/school facility.

Please note that some new photo galleries have been added to the alumni page, as well as more photographs of the 2004 Great Gathering. Please check these out. Also, the school newspaper files can be found on this page, and there's more L-S news to be gleaned from them.

Here is our equivalent of the Times Square electronic news zipper: ....The drama department is getting ready to raise the curtain on its second production, "Into The Woods" (the first one was Hamlet) ....the Faculty/Staff talent show is ready to take to the stage....A new school AIDS Quilt was dedicated last month in memory of alumni Peter Ehrenfeld, George McGovern, Jimmy McIntyre, Eric Gupton, Thomas Hammond, Matt Holland, John Lafler, Sean O'Neill, Stephen Porter, Charles Reade, Brad Truesdale (the original quilt was lost during the move)...Registrar Maryellen Gallagher will be retiring at the end of January after 20 years of dedicated service....the 19th-annual MLK Award went to Dr. James O'Connell, a founder of Boston Health Care for the Homeless, while alumna Laurie Ball, '00, currently in Bosnia, received the Award of Promise......Alum Craig Ginsberg helped produce a recent PBS documentary, 'Raising Cain,' about the emotional life of boys. Part of it was shot at L-S....plans are underway for marking the school's 50th anniversary next year. Stay tuned.

By the way, the class of 1995 made a very generous donation to the Martin Luther King Action Project with money left over from its successful reunion. Take a bow, class of '95! And don't forget to list your class reunion information on this page.

Our alum search engine is temporarily down. Sorry. We are working on it!

Lastly, on a very sad and tragic note, alumnus Edward Schiller was murdered in Newton last month. The crime is under investigation.

There will be at least one more newsletter this year.

That's it for now.
