Newsletter 10/2005

Fall Edition

School opened smoothly in September 2005, and we all recently survived nine solid days of rain (and no leaks in the building!). Speaking of the building, the project is edging today completion as the punch list shrinks. Venting was finally accomplished in the photo room, so classes on photography are happening. The new tennis courts are being used. The new softball field, located where the senior parking lot used to be, is close to done The new artificial turf field is seeing a lot of use. Basically everyone is getting used to our new home. (And that was the 4th use of "new" in as many sentences, which give you a sense of the state of things here).

We will be doing some pondering about and celebrating of our school's glorious history next year, when L-S commemorates its 50th anniversary. Stay tuned for events you might be interested in attending.

The school is now up to about 1650 students and still growing. The generational turnover of teachers continues. There are few old veterans left, and most will be be retiring within the next five or so years. This year L-S will say an official goodbye to Debby Grace (History), Bill Plott (English & Drama), and Bill Schechter (History), though they may reprise their roles for a year or two as part-time emeritus teachers.

Last year, L-S mobilized to deal with the Tsunami catastrophe, raising over $25,000. But, as you know, the disasters have kept coming. In mid-October, L-S hosted a "Salute to New Orleans/ A Mardi Gras of Compassion," during which the school opened its door to the community for various events. (A number of our alumni had been turned away from their colleges in New Orleans). A good deal of money was raised for the Red Cross. And now comes the situation in Pakistan. We have just finished collecting coasts. As you, we all feel a bit overwhelmed.

In late October, the Martin Luther King Action Project--which won a distinguished award for the Boston Food Bank--will hold the 18th Annual ÒJimmy MacÓ March to raise the consciousness and money necessary to defeat AIDS. The march also serves as a remembrance of the 11 L-S alumni who have succumbed to this modern plague, beginning with the namesake of the march, Jimmy MacIntrye.

The first school play of the year is in rehearsal: Hamlet. No doubt, it will be the usual Plott spectacular. We lost in football to A-B, but the girls volleyball team just keeps rolling a along. And the boys 2004-2005 state championship baseball banner will soon be raised in the George Memorial Horton gym.

That's about it for now.
